Ice fishing in January was highlighted by the trout opener the middle of the month. Unfortunately the reports across the area for that weekend were a bit lack luster. John was out on both Tofte and Miners Lake with only minimal success. John reported that the number of people fishing on Tofte was unbelievable. Because of the lack of snow the lakes could be driven on with snowmobiles, 4 wheelers and full size trucks.
I have not really heard of much going on with the walleye and northern fishing. The crappies should start getting active soon, especially in March and early April, if the ice holds out. As the spring arrives we will be able to get a better handle on ice out dates. Based on the winter so far we will probably be looking at a more normal ice out in late April versus opening weekend.
Boundary water permits are selling out fast so please call if you have any desire for a guided trip in to Basswood Lake.
